About This Item
Thirty-fourth printing. Grade level: 3-7. Reading age: 8-12 years. Used book may have markings, writing from the previous owner. No DJ. Some bumping, rubbing, fading on the top, spine, edges, corners. Outer page edges with tanning, browning, stains and foxing. Slight dampstain on the tail outer edges but has not interfered with the reading material. In 1864, Caddie is 11 and runs around with her brothers, Tom, 13, and Warren, 9. The family lives in Wisconsin and when they arrived, she and her sister Mary, were quite frail. Mary died so her father asked her mother to let him try an experiment. He wanted Caddie to run wild with the boys rather than learn to be a lady indoors. So she's raised as a tomboy and she and her brothers get into quite a bit of mischief. A26.
Synopsis
Caddie Woodlawn is a popular children's novel by Carol Ryrie Brink, and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman which won the John Newbery Medal in 1936. Set in the 1860s, it is about a lively eleven-year-old tomboy named Caroline, nicknamed "Caddie", living in the area of Downsville, Wisconsin in the United States, and her experiences with the nearby Indians. It was written in 1935; Brink transformed it to a drama in 1945.

My fifth grade read this book to our class and I've always loved it. It is a picture of how life used to be. I recommend it greatly.
