Sir Henry Alexander wrote his famous guide to the Cairngorms over half a century ago. While the profile of the landscape has remained unchanged the surface detail and knowledge have not. This latest edition of the guide is the first to be completely rewritten since Sir Henry's definitive account of the Cairngorm mountains which had been revised several times. Dr Adam Watson, with his immense knowledge of the area, was the most recent reviser; but now, with a further edition required, events and changes in the landscape compel a reappraisal and new appreciation of the Cairngorms in the light of the mid 1970s. The book is no longer aimed exclusively at the climber who is served with separate pocket guide books. Everyone with a broad interest in outdoor recreation will find the present work invaluable indeed essential for a visit to the area. For those with mountaineering interests a general description of some of the best climbs, hard and easy, is included in each chapter. The design and presentation of the book continues to be revised. More photographs are included, and there are sketch maps by James Renny for each of the 15 subdivisions of the region. As always, the author has endeavoured to provide the most up to date information on matters of access, accommodation shelters, public transport systems, etc.
