Collection from family trip in 1952 includes original letter from Cunard Line Agents' Bulletin C-16 dated 6/14/52 in very good condition. Two brochures from the Caronia, one artist signature is G.H. Iavis. One book printed in England, one is printed in U.S.A. and the letter is from New York. Minor scratches and wear for the age and the First Class tag for the Cunard White Star Limited to Southampton, First Section is intact with the oriingal string. The Union Benevolent Association was established in 1831 to provide assistance to Philadelphia residents by lending stoves to help heat their homes during a harsh winter, along with wood and coal. The intention was to help the "worthy poor" without regard for religion or race. The activities of the organization have evolved since 1831; today it provides grants to projects to fight poverty. This report contains a list of people who contributed to the Union Benevolent Association for the previous year with the amount given, as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked. The (male) officers of the Association are listed; none of the members of the Ladies' Board of Managers are named, although the majority of the report is theirs. Scarce. Signed by Laws.John Keeble in his A Tribute to B G Laws we learn Laws was born on February 6, 1861 in Barnsbury, London and died on September 21, 1931 in London, also composed problems under the noms de plume, Handley Roads (while living on Hanley Road); S. Green (while living at Stroud Green); N.R.S (the final initials of his three names. Benjamin Glover Laws); C. Hill (Crouch Hill); I. S. Lington (Islington); C. Horn (Hornsey). Keeble wrote that, "Mr. Laws started his problematic career in a column edited by F. C. Collins in Brief. . . In the issue of June 7th, 1878, Mr. Laws is announced as having sent four problems to the Chess editor, who acknowledged them, in reply to correspondent, as follows: - "We have much pleasure in inserting your two-move position. 1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Signed by Skylab Astronaut Ed Gibson, this listing is for a lovely 8x10 color photo featuring an artist rendering of the Skylab space station. Mr. Gibson also added a wonderful inscription as shown in my photo. Condition is as new. This item includes a Certificate of Authenticity from the original owner.
