About This Item

William Heinemann. London 1913. 'New and Cheaper Edition'. (complete & abridged, same number of pages as original edition).. Bookplates to front pastedown. externally quite worn and not impressive, dulled, bumped at corners &c. contents unmarked. a clean sound copy.. Gilt title on blue cloth boards. 231pp illustrated 4to. 1.3kg. Excellent photographs considering the difficulties and low level technology available over 100 years ago. These were taken at a time when Africa was relatively unspoiled. The author's route took him from Mombasa past Nairobi to Lakes Naivasha & Nakuro, with a diversion to Fort Hall and beyond to Meru. Interesting advice on equipping and preparing a similar expedition. The photographic kit comprised a huge reflex camera, plates were developed in camp. Subject matter includes scenery and local inhabitants, but is mostly of wildlife.
