New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo. [3], iv-v, [8], 4-295, [8] (publisher's advertisements) pp. The advertisements in the rear include notices of Ben-Hur and Elizabeth Custer's Boots and Saddles. Navy cloth with lettering in gilt on the spine, title in gilt on the front board with a decorative gilt shield with fringe and surrounding axes embossed on the front board. Illustrated by a frontispiece and nine additional plates. In addition to Campaigning with Crook, the book includes the stories "Captain Santa Claus", "The Mystery of 'Mahbin Mill", and "Plodder's Promotion". Graff 2326. Captain Charles King served in the Civil War, the Sioux Campaigns, the Spanish American War, and saw action in the Philippines. He was a prolific writer, with this book's account of campaigning with Major General Crook drawn from several publications in the Milwaukee Sentinel. The articles were published in pamphlet form in 1880, then in book form in 1890 (Internet Archive, "The Life of Charles King"). A Near Fine book with three newspaper clippings pasted in on the flyleaves, one of which talks about the exploits of Captain King, and his skirmishes with Native American tribes. The free front endpaper shows a spot of offsetting from one of the newspaper clippings.
