About This Item
Canton Company of Baltimore, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Hardcover, 35 pages. Profusely illustrated. A remarkably nice copy of this 90+ year old book - it honestly looks like it was printed yesterday. You will not find a better copy. Binding is solid and square. Clean inside and out, with no markings of any kind. "To those Baltimoreans of long ago whose foresight and energy made possible the Canton of today, and to all who look upon this section as a great industrial development, but know little of its thousands of homes or of the romance and adventure within its boundaries in former times, this booklet is dedicated on the hundredth anniversary of the Canton Company of Baltimore - December, 1928". Canton is a historic waterfront neighborhood located along the south eastern section of the outer harbor in Baltimore, MD. It is south and east of Fell's Point. It was initially developed as an industrial and commercial district, and included Major David Stodder's shipyard, where the USS Constellation was built. Canton has been home to numerous waves of immigrant populations, including Welsh, Irish, Germans, Poles and Ukrainians. After languishing for some time with the collapse of its industrial base beginning in the 1970s, Canton has undergone a major revitalization (or gentrification) in recent history, and today is one of the city's trendiest areas.
