About This Item

London: Michael Joseph, 1950 . Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A later impression of this uncommon omnibus of Captain Hornblower tales, written by C. S. Forester, with the dust wrapper and scarce wraparound band. The tenth impression of the work, first published in 1939. Bound in the publisher's cloth with the scarce, price-clipped dust wrapper and the even more scarce wraparound band. This omnibus is comprised of three novels by English author C. S. Forester, who is best known for his exciting tales of naval warfare. In particular, Forester's Horatio Hornblower series was very well received, consisting of twelve novels depicting the titular character as a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic Wars. This omnibus contains 'The Happy Return', 'A Ship of the Line' and 'Flying Colours', which are the eighth, ninth and tenth in the series, previously published separately between 1937 and 1938.As depicted on the wraparound band, Winston Churchill wrote in 'The Grand Alliance' that he found the Hornblower series 'admirable' and 'vastly entertaining'. Bound in the publisher's cloth with the price-clipped dust wrapper and wraparound band. Externally, excellent, with light shelf wear and the odd mark. Offsetting causing a small mark to the tail of the spine, with a few small holes to the front joint tail. Slight loss to front endpaper due to label removal. Dust wrapper is sound, with light chipping to the extremities and the odd closed tear. Slight rubbing to the wraps and sunning to the spine, heavier to the wraparound. Small tide marks to the reverse. Tape repair to the front and rear extremities of the wrap . Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

"Hornblower and the Atropos" skippering the flagship for Nelson's funeral on the Thames is not Hornblower's idea of thrilling action. But soon his orders come, and he sets sail for the Mediterranean in the Atropos. 'Battle, storm, shipwreck, disease - what were the chances that he would never come back again?' "The happy return" Hornblower sails the South American waters and comes face to face with a mad, messianic revolutionary in a novel that ripples with risk and gripping adventure. "a ship of the line" commando raids, hurricanes at sea, the glowering menace of Napoleon's onshore gun batteries - Hornblower must deal with them all as he sails his ship to the Spanish station. Throughout his escapades Forester remains gallant, resourceful and courageous - the embodiment of all the most vivid in a great naval tradition.
