On 11 Aug 1821, the HMS Doris left Falmouth for Brazil under the command of CAPT Thomas Graham with the mission to safeguard British interests along the coast. He was accompanied by his wife, Maria, who kept a journal of her two years on ship. She wrote of storms, earthquakes, horseback journeys, illness, revolution and death, along with her observations of Brazil and Chile as they reached the point of winning independence from the colonial rule of Portugal and Spain. This journal offers a personal record of her adventures and a survey of historical events of the time. A clean very presentable copy.
