Edinburgh; Printed for the Author by T. and A. Constable, 1900., 1900. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION: LIMITED EDITION of 300 copies only. Quarto, pp. xxxii, 339, [1]; [7], vi-xi, [1], 350, [2]. Engraved portrait frontispiece of the Author as frontispiece to Volume I with tissue guard; numerous decorative initial letters and illustrations throughout text. Publishers' trade binding, white parchment with maroon labels with gilt tittles and decoration to spine; top edge gilt, others uncut. Binding very slightly surface soiled, with minor wear to spine tips. Contents clean and crisp with no annotation or inscriptions. An excellent set, in an unusually clean binding. First printing of Carmichael's magnum opus of Gaelic folklore and customs, mostly drawn from the Western Isles, which was eventually expanded to six volumes. The songs and verses are printed in parallel Gaelic and English text. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
