About This Item
New York, NY: Sheed & Ward, 1948. First Edition, First Thus . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Text/Near New. Taupe linen boards/VG; w/rubs to corner tips & light soiling. DJ/None. Paperclip shadow & the word "Japan" to fEP. Introduction to Japan. Written on the eve of American Occupation, the book is in two parts. The first recounts Japan's ancient, traditional past, and the second deals the psychological effects of that cultural heritage. "General MacArthur made no secret of his hopes of seeing, not only the democratisation of Japan, but also its Christianisation." (page 248). Though not expressed, it was the author's hope as well. A List of Papal Encyclicals and Pronouncements follows the Glossary. The book is a thorough attempt to portray Japan and concludes on a humanistic up note, "... when the psychology of Japanese had been analysed, it might perhaps be found that their behavior did not, in actual fact, differ very much from our own." (page 223.)
