About This Item

Doubleday and Company, 1967. first edition. hardcover. good: former library copy with usual markings and materials present. text clean, lean in spine/good: covered in library plastic cover, taped to boards, NOT price clipped. 8vo 191pp. from front flap: "It was a voice, obviously female and obviously frantic, coming through the wall of the doctor's office that first intrigued Detective Inspector Septimus Finch. He couldn't hear everything, but now and then he could pick out a phrase, a sentence. "Those three late husbands had become friends," the Voice was saying. "That's not as unlikely as it might seem..." "All of them were..." "But when I got down, there was no one. He'd gone, like a ghost..." "I called out, but no one answered." To Finch, the conversation suggested a number of things--illegal entry; bigamy, perhaps; possibly blackmail. Later he met the owner of the Voice, and learned something about the three late husbands. What finally drew him into the case was not any of the possibilities he had envisioned, but murder." #00690.
