About This Item
Warszawa - Upsala: Biblioteka Narodowa - Upsala Universitetsbiblioteket, 2007 3 volumes 8vo (24 cm), 212 pp; 668 pp; 176 pp, 16 plates. Publishers wrappers and dust jackets. In 1626, Braniewo, a town in northern Poland, located in Warmia, was seized by the troops of Swedish king Gustav II Adolf. The king made the decision to transfer the library of the Jesuit college to the library founded in 1620 at Uppsala University. Joseph Trypućko (1910-1983), a professor of linguistics at Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, resettled in Uppsala after World War II. During his research for his publication "Polonica vetera Upsaliensia," he stumbled upon the handwritten catalogue from the Braniewo library and resolved to publish it. Although the project remained in a preliminary draft form prior to his passing, it was brought to completion through the collaborative efforts of both the National Library of Poland and the Library of Uppsala University. The publication spanned three volumes: the first comprising introductions, catalogs of manuscripts (63 items), and incunabula (340 items); the second containing a directory of sixteenth and seventeenth-century prints (2274 items); and the third featuring indexes and illustrations.
