About This Item

Mechelen, Belgium, 1872. Very Good. [Catholic Church] 1872 Document Concerning the Holy Relics of Saint Alphonsus Maria de Ligouri, Archbishop Victor Auguste Isidore Dechamps, Mechelen, Belgium, 1872, 10.75 x 14 inches, 1 pp.

Single page document with the coat of arms of Belgian Archbishop Victor Auguste Isididore Dechamps; text bright and legible; some edge wear, overall, very good condition.

Roughly translated document concerning the approval and storage of holy relics, likely those of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, a Roman Catholic diocese in the Province of Benevento, Campania, southern Italy. From what I can discern, this document is a record of the examination of St. Alphonsus Ligouri's relics and their return to proper storage; it is unclear if Archbishop Dechamps examined them himself or if it was merely done by his mandate. Victor Auguste Isidore Dechamps (1810-1883) was a Belgian Catholic Archbishop of Mechelen, and Cardinal and Primate of Belgium.

St. Alphonsus Ligouri (1696-1787) was an Italian Catholic bishop, writer, musician, artist, lawyer, philosopher, and renowned theologian. He is one of the most widely read Catholic authors and is the patron saint of confessors, of moral theologians because of his brilliance, and of the work of lay people because of his productivity. He was a child prodigy, earning a doctorate of law at the age of 16, and was ordained as a priest when he was 29, becoming very popular due to the simple language he used when preaching, making his sermons accessible to the average lay person. He wrote prolifically, producing over one hundred works on spirituality and theology. Ligouri was canonized as a saint in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI. Today his relics rest in the Basilica di Sant'Alfonso in Pagani, Italy.
