In addition to analyzing the negative impact of press censorship in the Dutch East Indies, this history looks at a type of constructive censorship in colonial Indonesia, which sought to bring about specific cultural and political expressions, inspire unity, and create favorable public perceptions of government authority in the Dutch colonies of Indonesia. The book’s chronological treatment traces the process by which censorship in the region was conceived, implemented, challenged, and ultimately forced to adapt. Drawing on newspapers, Dutch colonial documents, archives in The Hague, and other primary sources, the book examines related factors such as nationalist politics in Java, the Islamist movement in Sumatra, and Chinese journalistic activities.
