S. in 1881 by The Century Company of New York City, which had been bought in that year by Roswell Smith and renamed after the Century Association. It was the successor of Scribner's Monthly Magazine. The initial editor was Richard Watson Gilder, the managing editor of Scribner's, who would go on to helm The Century for 28 years. Stout HC soundly bound in quarter grain patterned leather backed spine and corners and pebbled cloth boards. Handsomely bound with an impressive shelf presence. Includes a prodigious number of pieces on Civil War history penned by participants and which form part of the larger work "Battles and Leader of the Civil War" along with an early history of American football by Alexander Johnston and John Burroughs "Among the Wildflowers." Many other outstanding pieces and authors. Light rub through to leather at corner tips. Contents sound and neat with expected mild toning to page stock. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts.
