New York: Macmillan, 1927 An intrepid group of women formed the American Woman's Hospitals service during World War Iand first provided nursing and hospital services in France. In the aftermath of the war they turned their attention to other areas of urgent need, providing medical care and relief to the war-torn and destitute populations in Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Armenia, Russia and Turkey. The author provides her own eyewitness account of the destruction of Smryna in September 1922. The AWH follwed those refugees who survived to Greec and established emergency medical services in Greece with particular support for the refugee women and children of Asia Minor, efforts to control epidemics through a quarantine station on Makronissos, and assistance to a second wave of refugees from the Black Sea who were sent to Macdedonia and Thrace in the exchange of populations after the Treaty of Lausanne. The benefits provided were incalculable: "On the Ægean Islands and mainland of Greece, the American Women's Hospitals' service for refugees expanded beyond all expectations. During the past eleven years, 39 hospitals (including Near East Relief orphanage infirmaries) have been organized and conducted at different times and places. Scores of inlying and outlying clinics, a quarantine island, camps and barracks for pestilential diseases, food and clothing depots, health and child welfare centers, maternity service and nurses' training, have been carried on in connection with these hospitals" 302p. plates maps on endpapers. 1st.US Ed... Hard Cover. Very Good.

New York: Macmillan, 1933. New edition, revised and reset. Hardcover. Very Good. frontis, photos, xii, 302p. Original maroon cloth. 22 cm. Minor cover soiling and wear, include a couple of modest bumps. No Jacket. INSCRIBED on half-title by Lovejoy ("To Louise Lovejoy Saunders --- E. Lovejoy" -- perhaps someone related to her second and final husband from who she was divorced in 1920). An account of relief efforts by American Women's Hospitals among the refugees in or from the former Ottoman Empire after World War I.
