About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. The Charge of the Light Brigade was a poem written to commemorate a suicidal indictment by a facile army over British forces in the Battle of Balaclava in Ukraine during the Crimean War. 247 men of the 637 in the army were killed or injured. Britain sought the war, which was fought by Russia against Turkey, Britain and France, because Russia attempted to invade the Dardanelles, which admonished British sea routes.

Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS was a Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during the reign of Queen Victoria and he is among the very famous English poets.

Tennyson was successful at writing short lyrical poems, as "Break, Break, Break", "The Charge of the Light Brigade", "Tears, Idle Tears", and "Crossing the Bar". Most of his works were subjected on historical themes of mythology, as Ulysses, Although In Memoriam A.H.H. was written in remembrance of his friend Arthur Hallam, also a poet and student at Trinity College, Cambridge, when he died of a stroke at a very young age. Tennyson also wrote some remarkable blank verse such as Idylls of the King, "Ulysses", and "Tithonus". Tennyson tried his efforts in writing plays but was not that successful. He is the ninth placer of the most famous writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.

Other works for which he is also best known are, Nothing Will Die, All Things Will Die, The Dying Swan, The Kraken, Mariana, Lady Clara Vere de Vere, The Lotos-Eaters, The Lady of Shalott, St. Simeon Stylites, Locksley Hall, Vision of Sin, The Two Voices, Godiva, Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal, The Eagle, The Brook (famous for its line ?For men may come and men may go, But I go for ever?), Flower in the crannied wall, and all his other extensive and lovely works of poetry.
