London: The Hakluyt Society, 1988. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. The Voyage of the Endeavour 1768-1771 Profusely illustrated with maps and charts, some in colour, some folding. Navy blue cloth with gilt decal of a masted ship, gilt spine lettering, Cream dust jacket with black lettering on front and spine shows minor wear (small tears to extremities; some minor smudging ) Captain James Cook (1728-1779), British explorer, navigator and cartographer, substantially contributed to the knowledge of the Pacific Islands and the coast of North America and Siberia in the three voyages spanning twelve years from 1768 to 1780. These were voyages of discovery and exploration, and included surveying and charting for the Admiralty and commercial navigation. This is Volume One of a three volume set, one for each of the three voyages. This edition publishes for the first time many of the charts and coastal views from the voyages that were not included in the journals, atlases or portfolios. The first voyage of the Endeavor,1768 to 1771, explored the South Pacific islands, New Zealand and Australia, and searched for the unknown southern continent.
