"Thus began the first major attempt to describe the Cherokee Nation's history and heritage. However, forty years separated the publication of Adair's work from 1735 when he had migrated from England and 'appeared in South Carolina.' When he first traveled and traded among them, the Cherokees lived simply and happily in their wilderness setting, numbering (according to the most intelligent old traders of the time) 'upwards of 6000 fighting men' in 64 towns and villages which also were 'full of women and children.' However, during those four decades, the Cherokee warriors not only struggled against Carolinian colonist's but also found themselves in almost constant hostilities against the 'Muskohge' (Creek) nation, to the end that by 1775 their numbers had been reduced to not more than 2300 warriors, 'a great diminution for so short a space of time.'....
