About This Item

Little, Brown And Company, 1973. First edition, as stated. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good except as noted.. Clean, tight 8vo, 302pp. Dust jacket has several small open tears and some chipping to the top edge. Front edge has several small brown spots that are probably coffee or tea?, but they don't bleed through to the pages. In spite of Native American Eskimo warning of a short season and harsh winter, 32 American whaling vessels carrying 1200 officers and crew members, elected to cruise in the treacherous waters off Alaska's Point Barrow. The vessels were helplessly traped or crushed in packed ice. The masters had to abandon the fleet where it was and take to the sea in small boats. Somehow they were all eventually rescued. It's quite a story!
