About This Item
New York:: Dodd, Mead,, 1886.. Hardcover first edition -. Very near fine in black cloth with gilt lettering and illustrations on the covers and spine (very minor shelfwear) A lovely copy of a rather uncommon book. . First printing. The first book by this American poet and actor, a series of interconnected stories as told by the Indian on a penny left, as a Christmas gift, by a warm-hearted shop-girl on the windowsill of a little lame boy. Illustrated throughout with charming drawings - including some full page plates, headpieces and tailpieces and en texte drawings - by the artist Clinton Peters (1865-1948). In reviewing the English edition, The Spectator commented "This, of course, reminds one of the immortal Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen's spirit has, indeed, been happily caught by the writer, and the writer has been very successfully seconded by the artist. The pictures, indeed, are strikingly superior to what we commonly find in books of this kind. They come, it will have been seen, from the other side of the Atlantic. Illustration is certainly one of the things which, on the whole, they manage better over there." Frontispiece with tissue guard. Slightly oversized format. 161 pp,
