About This Item
New York: The Grolier Society, 1911. FIRST EDITION / FIRST PRINTING. Bound in morocco leather bindings. Gilded spines. The top edges are gilded. Heavily illustrated. Printed on thick paper. Decorative border surrounding the text on each page. Columned text. 9 7/8 inches tall. 29 inches of shelf space. Good condition only and consistent to that grade. The leather is supple. The hinges are all strongly attached. In a few areas there is some edge starting. Some chips, as shown. General rubs / usage wear. A little loose. A closed tear. Just a substantial amount of generalized usage wear. This set displays beautifully. Heavily illustrated. The illustrations were mostly anonymous but some illustrators included Susan Beatrice Pearse, C. E. Brock, Thomas Maybank, George F. Morrell, Dudley Heath, Charles Folkard, H. R. Millar, Alexander Francis Lydon, Arthur A. Dixon and Arthur Rackham. The books used photographs by Frank Hinkins, engravings, maps and graphics. This set would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any fine library. In addition to their shelf presence, antiquarian books make an excellent investment.
