About This Item
Washington, D. C.: Children's March for Survival, 1972. The program for a 1972 march to "focus national attention on the plight of children in America" who "are exploited - by the government for its war, by employers for 'cheap' labor and by the death pushers of heroin." The march was held on Saturday, March 25, 1972, in Washington, D. C., and although it attracted activists and residents from other cities, a New York Times article suggests that as many as two-thirds of the 30,000 marchers were from D. C.'s black community. Speakers included Eugene McCarthy, Bella Abzug, Shirley MacLaine, Gloria Steinem, and "anti-war activists," John Kerry. Besides the march, the day included a "'Cildrens [sic] Festival of Life' with music, games, theater and a do-it-yourself art fair, ...free medical screening for sickle cell anemia, lead poisoning and nutritional deficiencies [and] additional educational programs and tours..." An 8 ½" x 11" sheet of folded yellow stock (5 ½" x 8 ½"), [4] p., illus. Slightly mis-folded, horizontal crease, a few spots of grubbiness, but a VG survivor.
