About This Item

New-York: Leavitt & Allen, 1854., 1854.. Fair. - 12mo, 5-3/4 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Softcover, bound in stitched pale yellow wrappers titled with a vignette illustration adorning the front cover and a full-page woodcut illustrating the "Death of Nelson" on the rear cover. The covers are darkened and stained and the corners worn. There is a tiny chip out from the front edge of the rear cover. The chipped and worn spine was roughly re-stitched at an earlier time. 64 pages, with pages 15 and 16 being a plate (Admiral Keppel) which is mis-bound in front of the first story. Illustrated with a title page vignette and 16 full-page plates illustrating the stories. The endpapers, printed on different stock, are darkened and stained. The page corners are creased and slightly worn. The binding is shaken and there is some foxing and staining throughout.

Published in 1854 with a copyright date of 1853.

Albert F. Twombly's Christmas gift inscription, dated 1854, is penned on the front endpaper.

The stories contained within this little volume are titled: "Story of Two Mohawks", "Admiral Keppel and the Dey", "Death of Colonel Gardiner", "The Careless Father", "The Bravery of Lord Nelson", "Death of Nelson", "Heroic Action of Kerserho", "Story of Francis the First", "The Adopted Child", "Story of Henry the Fifth", "Heroism of Dacheux", "The Good Son", "The Humane Islanders", "A Duel Prevented", "A Mandan Cemetery", and "Perseverance Rewarded".

WorldCat attributes authorship of this little volume to the American theologian and author Increase Niles Tarbox (1815-1888). A graduate from Yale University, he served as pastor of the Framingham Congregational Church in Massachusetts and secretary of Boston's American College and Education Society while completeing his Doctor of Divinity degree at Yale. A conservative theologian, he delivered "An Address on the origin, progress & present condition of philosophy" at Hamilton College, explaining how cemeteries amplify the moral influence of Christianity. He delivered the address dedicating the Framingham Cemetery in 1848.
