About This Item
Shanghai: Kelly and Walsh, Limited, 1932. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Duodecimo size, 116 pp. This collection of recipes offers a myriad of Chinese dishes, from tea and appetizers to main courses to desserts; the recipes are from The Nellie Wong Tea Shop, "the only place in Peking". The recipes are collected in a stab-bound volume with two old Chinese coins, possibly from the Ming dynasty, tied with string to the stab binding; the volume is filled with black-and-white photographs of the delicious food. Presented in English, the recipes are intended for English-speakers wishing to make traditional Chinese food.
___DESCRIPTION: Orange paper over heavy cardboard, stab binding with gold string and exposed spine, black lettering on the front board, Chinese characters in black on the rear board, two coins tied to the first hole of the stab binding, frontispiece a black-and-white photograph of a table of Chinese food captioned "Table set for Chinese dinner", black-and-white photographs of various dishes throughout; duodecimo size (7.25" by 5.25"), pagination: [i-xviii] 1-87 [88-98]. This edition stated as the "Revised and Enlarged Edition" on the title page, with a date of 1932; per the copyright page, the first edition was published in 1927 and the "New Edition" in 1930.
___CONDITION: Very good, with straight corners, we had a professional restore the joints and replace the string binding (name available upon request) so the text block is now strong and square, and the interior is clean and bright; some overall soiling to the boards, some rubbing to the edges and corners of the boards, and a prior owner name written in pen on the front free endpaper as well as a note written in pencil on page 37. Even with its few flaws, internally bright, complete, with a strong text block; a very nice example of a relatively uncommon Chinese cookbook.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
