A very good copy in contemporary cloth, paper label on spine. Cloth a little marked and soiled. A collection of Chinese poetry, largely classical, but with a handful of poems from the 17th and 18th centuries, translated into English by Herbert Giles (1845-1935), a British diplomat stationed in China from 1867 until 1892, and appointed professor of Chinese at Cambridge in 1897. Giles provides seven pages of critical notes and a six-page index of poets and their poems. This book was printed by E.J. Brill at Leiden.
