Image measures 6" x 9".<br/><br/> This lovely view by Sarony and Co. of a Chinese temple in Hong Kong was drawn from nature by Wilhelm Heine with figures by Eliphalet Brown Jr. It features two Chinese men sitting in the foreground near a road. People can be seen walking towards the Chinese temple featured in mid-ground with Victoria Peak looming in the background.<br> <br> This view appears in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. The view is in good condition with minor foxing and staining, especially along the margins.<br> <br> Dr. Francis Lister Hawks (1798 - 1866) was an American priest of the Episcopal Church, and a politician in North Carolina.<br/><br/>

Description:
(Washington).: (A.O.P. Nicholson).. [circa1856.]. Tinted lithograph 22.5 x 15.4 cm, 21.7 x 28.9 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner stained, but the image in very good condition. A tranquil view rendered on the spot ("From nature") by William Heine with figures from a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Bronwn, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". Perry visited the Canton river in 1853, and his narrative noted local features including sites of religious significance. .
