About This Item

Lahore: Civil and Military Gazette Press, 1895. First edition. vi, 76 pages. Original publisher's green cloth.  A very good copy.

"Printed for private circulation." A religious missionary-based text with a curious 2-page Appendix. The latter text attempts to demonstrate the immorality of Hinduism by noting that a Dr. A.W. Hitt had treated in 1894 numerous "Brahmans" who either had syphilis or other "diseases consequent upon immorality." This is follow by a rather mind-numbing statistical analysis and enumeration of wives amongst "618 bigamists and 520 polygamists."

This theme of immorality is found throughout, e.g. "To remain a Hindu means the gratification of every lust, and the satisfying of every appetite. Even relatives and friends fan the flames of passion and allure into sin." (p48, pointing the Reader to the Appendix)

Robert Parmelee Wilder (1863-1898) was a Protestant missionary born in Kolhapur, India and educated at Princeton and then at Union Seminary. Afterwards, he was
was appointed by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions for student work in India. Wilder has been described as one of the pioneers in the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions which enthusiastically evangelized American Protestant belief worldwide.
