About This Item

Nobleboro, Maine: Henry Beston, 1958. Original autographed greeting card, note on Chimney Farm letterhead and stamped envelope. Written, signed and addressed by Henry Beston to his long-time friend and photographer, Clayton Smith of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

The greeting card features a Guinea Deer woodcut by Thomas Bewick and is signed "Henry and Betty" by Henry Beston.

His letter decries the violence of the Vietnam war, and ... proudly proclaims his four grandchildren in California.

His penmanship appears fragile, but his turn of phrase ever poetic.

Attention admirers and collectors of Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth: Many more unique items from TBCL's private Beston Collection are now available. Please contact us to find out more.
-------------------------------------
HENRY BESTON was an American writer and naturalist, and is considered one of the fathers of the modern environmental movement. His now classic observations of Cape Cod are captured in his classic, The Outermost House, written after Beston spent what he called "a year of life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod", and has been called one of the motivating factors behind the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Author Rachel Carson said that Beston was the only author who ever influenced her writing. Beston married writer Elizabeth Coatsworth in 1929. [22-33017].
