About This Item

London: William Smith, 1840. Hardcover. Near Fine. Translated by Thomas Johnes, Esq. Two volumes. 8vo. Pp. xx, 640; xvi, 552. With added chromolithographed title, and over 100 wood-engraved textual illustrations. Contemporary three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, with double gilt rules and elaborately gilt decorated spine in compartments between raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Minor rubbing and edgewear to bindings, occasional light marginal foxing, but otherwise a fine, handsome set. A reissue of Thomas Johnes' esteemed translation of the "Chronicles of Monstrelet", first published at his own press at Hafod House in Wales in 1809, this new edition differs particularly in its plentiful illustrations. Continuing the work of Froissart, Monstrelet's history covers the period between 1400 and 1444 and is contained in two books.
