Cyril Walter Hodges, worked as C.Walter Hodges.Born 1909, Beckenham, Kent, son of an advertising manager.Educated at Dulwich College (1922-25);studied at Goldsmith's College of Art under E.J. Sullivan (1925-28).Since 1928,he has designed stage sets for various theatres (including the Mermaid and St. George's Theatres,London),and since 1931,he worked as an illustrator of books and magazines and for advertisements. He also painted murals at the Chartered Insurance Institute (1934) and UK Provident Institute (1957) and has designed exhibitions and educational filmstrips. He served in the Army during WW2.He lectured at Brighton Polytechnic School of Art and Design (1959-69).His detailed and authoritative book,'Shakespeare's Theatre' (1964),was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for its illustrations. He has also written novels and short stories for children.Hodges has illustrated more than 90 books, mainly in pen and ink or watercolour. While the influence of E.J. Sullivan is visible in the fluent quality of his line,he developed very early a distinctive graphic 'handwriting' that has remained consistent throughout his career despite stylistic modifications.Fidelity to his texts and convincing characterisations have ensured his continued appreciation by adult as well as child readers.
