Particularly shewing that the White Horse which gives name to the Vale, is a monument of the West Saxons, made in memory of a great victory obtained over the Danes AD 871. By Francis Wise BD Fell of Trin:Coll:Oxon Oxford, Printed for Thomas Wood at the University Printing House, MDCCXXXVIII [1738] 58 pages + 2 folding plates. ESTC online T87599 bound with Further observations upon the White Horse and other antiquities in Berkshire with an account of the Whiteleaf Cross in Buckinghamshire. As also of the Red Horse in Warwickshire, and some other monuments of the same kind. By Francis Wise B.D.Fell. of Trin.Coll.Oxon. Oxford, Printed for Thomas Wood at the University Printing House, MDCCXLII [1742] 57 pages, 2 plates are included in the pagination + another folding plate which is not in the pagination. ESTC online T87618 Both titles are very browned and spotted throughout. There are ink notes and also ink underlining. Bound in 19th century half leather. The spine has been replaced as have some of the end papers. Scratches to the front board. Tear to the inner margin of the final page of the second title. Bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown of William George's Sons, Bristol. Pencil note scarce 15/-. The White Horse is at Uffington, then in Berkshire, now Oxfordshire. The Red Horse was near Tysoe in south Warwickshire..
