About This Item
Labaume, Eugene. CIRCUMSTANTIAL NARRATIVE OF THE CAMPAIGN IN RUSSIA: CONTAINING A FAITHFUL DESCRIPTION OF THE AFFECTING AND INTERESTING SCENES OF WHICH THE AUTHOR WAS AN EYE-WITNESS. Translated from the French. Hartford, S. Andrus & Son, 1848. 1st American edition. New cloth spine and marbled paper boards with the spine lettered in gilt. A daily account of events surrounding the advance of Napoleon's Fourth Corps into Russian territory beginning in July and ending in December of 1812. "I retraced, each night, the events of the day, sitting beside a wretched fire, under a temperature of ten or twelve degrees, and surrounded by the dying and the dead. The knife with which I had carved my scanty morsel of horse-flesh, was employed in cutting a raven's quill, and a little gunpowder, mixed with some melted snow, in the hollow of my hand, served me for ink and inkstand." -- Author's preface. Minor light foxing, attractive modern binding. BMC. NUC.
