This inquiry was pursued by Mr Wardle, who served as a soldier in Sir William Watkins Wynn's Ancient British Regiment of light dragoons. He had a great interest in and wished to end corruption in the army. Wardle alleged that the mistress of Frederick, Duke of York, Mary Anne Clarke was promising promotions to officers in return for money. Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany was the then commander in chief of the Army. Wardle's continued pressing of his case led to the duke's resignation as commander-in-chief. Due to his parliamentary privilege Wardle was able to fight against the government's libel action against the press which was intended to prevent the accusations against the Duke from becoming public.
