Original photograph - Schalekamp, J.M. (1844-1912). Scheveningen. Keizerstraat. Amsterdam, J.M. Schalekamp, ca. 1890-1900. ca. 22.5 x 16.5 cm.

Very rare original photograph by Johan Marinus Schalekamp (1844-1912), one of a group of original photographs which were used to make a picture postcard. We have traced some of the executed picture postcards, greatly reduced images of our original photographs. Schalekamp was one of the largest (possibly even the first) publishers of Dutch topographical picture postcards around 1900. He was active in Haarlem (1870-1879); Amsterdam (1881-1893) and Buiksloot (near Amsterdam, 1893-1912). He had a photographic studio, a (photo)lithographic and book printing office from 1893 onwards. Not only did he print his own picture postcards and books, but he also worked for other publishers.

Very good copy. Provenance: Bought by a Dutch collector of photography in the 1960s, beginning of 1970s. Titled in pencil on verso. RKD; Wachlin 2011, Vol. 2, p. 517 (as: Schalenkamp, Johan Marinus).

Description:
[no place]: [no publisher], [no date]. Very Good. Faux leather protective roll with three snap closures, containing one portrait on paper. The whole connected between two large (1 3/4 inch) dowel halves on one end. The salesman could add various portraits to the assemblage by separating the two half dowels, adding additional portraits, and screwing the assemblage together again. This example has a linen guard to protect the paper portrait as it is rolled and snapped shut. Leather roll is approx 17 inches wide and two foot long. Portrait in this case is of a distinguished man in a suit, shoulders up. Marked on the rear of this portrait (which is paper laid onto linen) is a stamp "Crayon" and various sizes and costs. Generally good condition, with some soiling to the faux leather, and minor creasing to the portrait. Large photographic prints were expensive and difficult to store and transport. This was one solution for photographers - a sample portrait that could be rolled up in a protective cover and… Read More

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are… Read More

Description:
1875. Single plate (22.9 x14.8cm) extracted from an early issue of Irving's The Theatre magazine, comprising tipped-in Woodburytype photograph (14.6 x 9.6cm) of Terry seated in her costume for the Merchant of Venice, with "The Theatre, No. 1, Third Series. Woodburytype" printed directly underneath. Terry sits aslant to her right, looking to her left, with her left hand raised and index finger pointing up, two books piled in the background tightly framing the back of her hand. With (mis)quotation from Act 4, Scene 1 in facsimile of Terry's flamboyant hand underneath: ""Come Merchant have you anything to say"?/ Portia/ Ellen Terry:". Triangle of white to bottom right corner of photograph, presumably from glitch in its reproduction, minute patch of wear to Terry's right cheek, page mount a little soiled, toned and wrinkled. Still, a pleasingly sharp and rich photograph for its age, indeed, as one would expect from the expensive Woodburytype process. Very good The University of Washington Libraries… Read More
