Red cloth-covered boards, gilt titles to front board, advertisements to front endpapers, to verso of some of early pages and to rear paste down. Contents include regulations for competition to enter the civil service as well as details of entrance examinations for various grades of employee, together with specimen questions. 274 pages in all. Small octavo, barely 7.5 inches high. Condition notes: Externally shabby, with stains and soiling to the boards, a pencilled number on the front board, wear and damage to the spine strip, probably related to removal of a label. Traces of tape that might have once held the label remain on the boards. The title page and at least one of the other pages has in ink "Jarrold & Sons Ltd Printing Office Copy". The page containing the Preface has the same number scrawled across it as the front board. Pages 17 to 32B are detached, as are pages 97 to 112. There is age-yellowing to the pages, but apart from the ownership inscriptions I can find no markings. The text is complete.
