About This Item

London England: Virgin, 2010. Hardback. Cleopatra. A Life. Tiny mark to inside cover.Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Cleopatra's palace shimmered with onyx and gold but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She weighed a brutal civil war against the first and poisoned the second; incest and assassination were family specialities. Cleopatra appears to have had sex with only two men. They happen, however, to have been Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, two of the most prominent Romans of the day. She had a son with Caesar and, after his murder, three more with his protege. Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Along the way the supple personality has been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, the author boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order, a generation before the birth of Christ. Rich in detail, epic in scope, the author's is a luminous, deeply original reconstruction of a dazzling life. Illustrated. 369 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). 1st Virgin Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Hardback.

Reviews

On Mar 16 2011, FarolB said:
Much has been written about Cleopatra, and probably we're all stuck with that image of Elizabeth Taylor in the role. But Schiff has written a biography that shows the cunning, the intelligence, and the place in history of a woman who's never been so thorougly revealed. An in-depth exploration of a personality ahead of her time, and a document that will please readers who love a story rich in authentic detail.
