About This Item
London: Adlard Coles Nautical, 1993. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 4 3/4" x 7 1/2. 216 Pages Indexed. A 1994 reprint of a 1973 copyright. Used book in very good condition. The art of clinker boatbuilding is being revived by amateur and professional builders all over the world as an antidote to the glossy conventions of mass-produced boats. Building your own wooden boat allows tremendous scope for individuality. The painstaking amateur can build a superior wooden boat for little more than the cost of materials-and this is amply repaid by the pleasure gained from building your own boat at home. This book describes clinker and cold-moulded construction methods for sailing, rowing or powered boats up to 20 feet in length. Every stage in the process is covered, from preparation, tools, materials, plans, keel structure, planking, frames, centreboards and decks to finishing off the hull, masts and oars. There are also specifications for three different clinker boats which can be built at home by the amateur. Brought up in the maritime traditions of north-east Essex with a family background of fishing, professional yachting and shipbuilding, John Leather is by profession a naval architect and has been involved with the design and construction of ships of all sizes and many types throughout his career. He is a Fellow of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and a chartered engineer. He has designed many small boats, yachts and small fishing vessels for friends, and has owned 15 small sailing craft. --- From the Back Cover. Previous books were Gaff Rig, and the The Northseamen.. He is author of 15 other maritime books.
