About This Item
[York]: [vs.], [1822-28] 19 single sheet handbills. A trifle creased and browned, some chipping to margins, occasional small holes. A collection of nineteen playbills, all apparently unrecorded, announcing performances at the Theatre Royal, York throughout the 1820s. Many of the performances featured actor John Langford Pritchard (1799-1850), a regular on the York circuit from the summer season of 1821. Plays staged include: English writer and Shakespearean editor Nicholas Rowe's (1674-1718) penultimate tragedy Jane Shore, first performed at Drury Lane in February 1714 and staged 19 times in its first run. Playwright and actor John Poole's (1785/6-1872) immensely popular Paul Pry, perhaps the most popular single piece to appear on the stage since The Beggar's Opera a century earlier. Edward Fitzball's (1793-1873) nautical drama The Flying Dutchman, or, the Phantom Ship, which had debuted at the Adelphi Theatre in 1827. Laugh When You Can (1798), a five-act comedy by Frederick Reynolds (1764-1841). [Further details for this item are available upon request]. . Dimensions 140 x 220 mm.
