V. 32". Clodd is listed in the printed dedication as one of Richards's "playmates on the coast of pleasure", alongside A. E. Housman, Frederic Jessel, Theodore Dreiser, E. S. P Haynes, and Philip Sainsbury. Richards (1872-7948) is best-known as a publisher. He launched the World's Classics series, and published Housman's A Shropshire Lad (1898), James Joyce's Dubliners (1914), and several titles by the recipient of this copy, Edward Clodd (1840-1930), including Pioneers of Evolution from Thales to Huxley (1897). Clodd was an anthropologist and early devotee of Darwin. He wrote many popular books on evolutionary science, and biographies of Darwin, Thomas Huxley, and Herbert Spencer. Octavo.
