Original ¼-paper-backed gray boards. Printed by William Molineux . Published by William Cobbett. N.D. (1817) First Edition. An English pamphleteer, farmer and journalist, William Cobbett gained a reputation as a rabble rouser, famed for his political publications aimed at working class readers. He believed that reforming Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm laborers, and he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly. Description:
[ London, 1817. viii,470 numbered columns. Contemporary boards, rebacked with plain paper spine. Untrimmed. Scattered foxing. Overall quite good. The second edition, after the first separate edition in two volumes of 1815. Cobbett rails against the paper-money system from the confines of Newgate Prison. "PAPER AGAINST GOLD is a collection of thirty-two 'letters' or articles (first published in the POLITICAL REGISTER, 1 September 1810 - 30 September 1815), all but the last three of which Cobbett proudly addressed from the 'State Prison, Newgate.' Cobbett in prison, however, was almost as active as Cobbett free...[he] had begun to see the growth of paper-money and the debt as twin evils which could bring a national catastrophe..." - Pearl. PEARL 81. REESE, FEDERAL HUNDRED 57 (ref).
