A fourth edition copy of John Sinclair's fascinating treatise on health, containing instructional guidelines to prolong life, preserve health, and cure and alleviate disease. Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster was both a renowned Scottish politician and a writer on both finance and agriculture. He is best remembered today as the first person to use the word statistics in the English language, in for his pioneering twenty volume work, 'Statistical Account of Scotland'. This work contains instructional directions to preserving health, and is divided into two parts. The first part contains information deemed 'essential for health and longevity' organised under the following six headings: 'Air', 'Diet', 'Motion and Rest', 'Sleeping and Watching', 'Retention and Excretion', and 'The Passions of the Mind'. The second part contains information deemed 'not so essential', organised under the following headings: 'Clothing', 'Habitation', 'Change to Residence', 'Customs and Habits Which Influence Health', 'Bathing', 'The Means of Preventing and Remedying Accidents or Common Disorders', and 'Articles of a Miscellaneous Nature'. A fourth edition copy, with additional information on 'the cure of Rheumatism'. Featuring a portrait frontispiece of Sir John Sinclair, and eight additional plates. Condition: In a half polished calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing to extremities and boards. Slight loss of leather to tail of spine. Front joint split and tender with leather to rear joint split, resulting in backstrip lifting. Hinges slightly split and strained, with front hinge split after title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned but bright and clean, with the odd spot to the occasional page. Faint tide mark to extremities of first few pages. Large faint tidemark to plates. Slight offsetting from plates to facing pages. Overall Condition: Good.
