About This Item

1828 James Bulcock first edition. 548 pages of text, followed by 17 figurative plates and 18 pages of printed music. Rebound with yellow/tan buckram boards, probably circa 1920 based on the binding materials used.

Uncommon, with only five other copies listed in OCLC.

Blasis was a 19th choreographer and dance instructor. His book was an early and highly influential study on dance theory and technique.

Condition of the book is Good. The binding is straight and sound. Condition issues include:

1) The section of printed music at the end of the book should be 22 numbered pages, not the 18 pages contained in this copy. The last two leaves of the book are missing. The missing content is limited to the music for the composition "La Bizarre". With the exception of these pages, the book is otherwise complete.

2) Moderate foxing, primarily affecting the preliminary and ending leaves, and the plates / printed music. The main portion of the printed text is clean. See the listing photos.

3) A dampstain at the top center of the plates and printed music. Again, the main text is not affected.

The text is organized in six parts:

RISE AND PROGRESS OF DANCING

THEORY OF THEATRICAL DANCING

ON PANTOMIME

THE COMPOSITION OF BALLETS

PROGRAMMES, CONTAINING EXAMPLES

PRIVATE DANCING

followed by a concluding section.
