About This Item

Jacket has creasing and closed tears along top edge that have been reinforced by clear tape on backside. Warmly inscribed by Burns to a fellow Atlanta newspaper reporter on the half title page. Additionally laid in is a handwritten postcard from the author and a two page typed letter signed, with several additional lines penned at the end.

Cold Sassy Tree is a 1984 novel by Olive Ann Burns. Set in a fictional Georgia, United States, town called Cold Sassy (and based on the actual city Harmony Grove, now Commerce) during 1905-1906, it follows the life of Will Tweedy, and explores themes such as religion, death, and social taboos. The sequel to the novel is Leaving Cold Sassy, which was published after Burns' death.

On Jan 18 2016, a reader said:
"Cold Sassy Tree" has a beauty in it that's truly endearing and moving. It is honest, heartfelt, witty, funny, and mostly nostalgic (for me at least). It takes place in small town Cold Sassy Tree where a scandal turns the lives of Will Tweedy, the narrator, and his family upside-down. As you follow his adventures and hear his take of happenings in his family and around town, you'll find yourself drawn to his stories like how some might find themselves drawn to a lava lamp. The story can be slow moving but it is worth your while. The best way I can describe my feelings toward reading Cold Sassy Tree is by envisioning how it would feel like if I had ever met my grandma and how she and I would sit in a quiet living room while I would listen to her tell stories of her childhood. If that is your cup of tea then you will enjoy Cold Sassy Tree.
