About This Item

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1980. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. Association copy (later printing) of this collection of short stories spanning the most productive portion of Eudora Welty's long career, inscribed to Frank Hodsoll, then chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Hodsell and Welty worked for years together at the NEA. Welty was already on the National Council on the Arts (Welty had been appointed by President Nixon in 1972)when Hodsoll was tapped by President Reagan in 1981 to head the NEA. Welty would go on to serve on the Arts Endowment's Committee of Leading American Artists in 1984, the year after this inscription, and would also earn the NEA's National Medal of Arts in 1986. A warm association. 9.25'' x 6''. Original cloth-backed boards. Original price-clipped dust jacket. 622 pages. Inscribed by Welty to half-title page, "To Frank Hodsoll / with good wishes for our work," dated March 11, 1983. Jacket with light edgewear, a couple tiny areas of rubbing. A few later leaves with tiny shallow folds. Clean.

Synopsis

This collection includes all forty-one of Eudora Welty's published stories, as well as a preface written for this book by Ms. Welty herself. Some selections included in this book: "A Piece of News" "The Hitch-Hikers" "A Curtain of Green" "Death of a Traveling Salesman" "Powerhouse" "The Wide Net" "The Winds" "At the Landing" "No Place for You, My Love" "The Burning" (if this and "At the Landing" don't dispel the image of Eudora Welty as the harmless little Southern lady, nothing ever will) "The Bride of the Innisfallen" "Ladies in Spring" "Where Is the Voice Coming From?" "The Demonstrators"
