New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1980. First edition. Fine in a near fine slipcase.. Limited autographed edition of Welty's collected short fiction, one of 500 copies signed by the author. A beautiful copy of this lovingly produced signed special edition, including all of Welty's (then) published stories since 1941, as well as two that had not yet appeared in print; the later paperback edition would win a National Book Award. With her 1980 introduction offering some notes on the history of their composition and her experiences with editors and readers Robert Penn Warren, Katherine Anne Porter, and William Maxwell. "I have been told," she writes, "both in approval and in accusation, that I seem to love all my characters. What I do in writing of any character is to try to enter into the mind, heart, and skin of a human being who is not myself." 9.25'' x 6.25''. Original burgundy cloth with gilt decoration and spine lettering. Maroon endpapers. In original maroon paper-covered slipcase with mounted paper label. 622 pages. Signed by Welty on recto of limitation page; numbered 211 of 500 copies on verso. Touches of shelfwear to slipcase. Else bright, clean, and sound overall.
