Toronto, 1970. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Anansi 1970). First HARDCOVER Edition in Second Issue D/W. Rare hardcover, First Issue without "first edition" statemement. Some light foxing to top edge of text block, else about fine in second issue D/W with the "Winner of the Governor General's Award" printed on the upper cover. The D/W has one small closed tear to the rear panel but is otherwise a near fine example. Among the scarcest Ondaatje items. The rarity of this title in first issue boards can be explained by the flood at the publisher around the time of the announcement of Ondaatje's GG win which destroyed "almost all" of the remaining hardcover copies of this book. The reasonable conjecture is that Anansi placed the second issue D/W on unsold stock when the GG was awarded. Rare. Photographs/scans available upon request.
Synopsis
Michael Ondaatje is the author of five novels, a memoir, a nonfiction book on film, and ten other books of poetry. The English Patient won, amongst other awards, the Booker Prize; Anil’s Ghost won the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, the Giller Prize, and the Prix Medicis. He lives in Toronto.
