About This Item
Pindar, Peter [Wolcot, John] COLLECTED WORKS... London: [various publishers] 1786-7. Quarto. 9 vols. bound in one. First and early editions. Contemporary full mottled calf, raised bands, gilt compartments, morocco label. Worn at spine, joints cracking and one cover loose; a very good clean tight crisp copy otherwise. This collection includes his two best-known works, and two unrecorded printings: A POETICAL, SUPPLICATING, MODEST AND AFFECTING EPISTLE TO THOSE LITERARY COLOSSUSES, 1787, a pirated edition; MORE LYRIC ODES, 1786, 3rd edition; FAREWELL ODES, 1786, 4th edition (same year as the first); THE LOUSIAD, 1787, 7th edition, with additions (two years after the first); A POETICAL AND CONGRATULATORY EPISTLE TO JAMES BOSWELL, 1787, 6th edition (one year after the first); BOZZY AND PIOZZI, 1786, 7th edition (one year after the first); AN APOLOGETIC POSTSCRIPT TO ODE UPON ODE, 1787, 1st edition; INSTRUCTIONS TO A CELEBRATED LAUREATE, 1787, 5th edition (same year as first edition). The editions of BOZZY AND PIOZZI and INSTRUCTIONS are unrecorded by NCBEL. Rothschild 2590, 2592. NCBEL, II:695-6.
