Language: English. Weight: 10 ounces. Trade Paperback. A collection of stories that reflect her experiences in Africa as well as her cleareyed but deep affection for that continent, especially Ethiopia. For Thomas's characters, Africa is a harsh, beautiful place stripped of sentimentality and grandiose possibilities and offering nothing more than the opportunity to struggle. I read this collection in 1988. It remains one of my absolute favorites. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa at the time. Her stories are remarkable. She really told it like it is, beautifully. If you want to know a place and culture, you will not get any closer.
