About This Item

London: McCorquodale & Co, Ltd, circa 1952. Double royal pictorial map, 103 x 65 cm, printed in colours, old folds (as issued), one or two marginal nicks, blank verso. Published by British railways, London Midland Region, in association with the Welsh Tourist Board. Kerry Lee (1902-1988) was a commercial artist and poster designer between the mid 1930s and the 1960s. Lee’s characteristic signature appears bottom right, accompanied by an image of the artist seated at his easel with his dog. The map features happy holidaymakers, figures from Welsh history stretching from Owain Glydnwr to David Lloyd George, and from a Roman legionary at Caerleon to a woman in Welsh national dress sweeping a French invader from Fishguard, a reference to the landing in 1798. The map is also populated with castles, railways, saints, scholars and other 'types' such as 'the coracle man'. ‘Cymru am byth’ translates as 'Wales forever'. Map
